Location and Site History

Located less than 4.5 klms from the Brisbane CBD, The Village at Coorparoo is the only integrated retirement living community in the south/east city fringe.  Located at one of the highest points in Coorparoo, the Village enjoys sweeping views to the Brisbane CBD, Story Bridge and beyond.  The property is nestled amongst high quality residential houses in one of Brisbane’s oldest and finest residential suburbs.  Coorparoo is typically characterised by original Queenslanders, undulating hills with magnificent views, extensive parklands, some of the finest restaurants and a variety of shopping precincts.

Heritage

The Coorparoo site was originally part of T.M. King’s Family Estate situated on the corner of Chatsworth and Cavendish Road on a 39 acre and 1 rood land parcel which was bought from the Queensland Government in 1885.

The centerpiece of King’s estate was the stately home ‘Erica’ which was built in 1890 and designed by prominent Brisbane architect J.J. Cohen. King named his home  ‘Erica’ in memory of Mount Erica (Prahran) in Melbourne where he lived previously and ‘Erica’ is the only remaining building designed by J.J. Cohen still standing in Brisbane.

In 1925 the house was sold to timber merchants Isaiah and Edith Lahey. At that time the land holding around ‘Erica’ had been reduced to 3 acres 1 rood 21 perches, as King had sold off much of the original land parcel prior to 1900.

In 1947 Mrs Lahey sold ‘Erica’ to the Catholic Church who established the Xavier Home for Crippled Children and later included Xavier Hospital which operated up until 1996.

As part of The Village at Coorparoo ‘Erica’ is to be restored to its former glory and is to become the key focus of the village’s community facilities. The restored building will house the new sales display office, residents lounge, dining rooms, café, library and administration.
